Weeds and Working Bees
Latest Monsoon on Record
On the second Saturday of each month, you’ll find Rapid Creek Landcare Group volunteers working near the mouth of Rapid Creek at The Spit. This February’s weeding bee coincided with the day the latest monsoon on record finally arrived. Members did manage to clear the mound that the orange-footed scrub fowl Megapodius reinwardt dig in to deposit their eggs. As usual, volunteers removed any vines threatening to smother shrubs abutting the monsoon vine thicket. On-site decisions often need to be taken. Although Acacia holosericea can be weedy it was decided to let it remain for the time being in order to provide a desirable overstorey.
Marrara Weed Walk
During 2024 the Darwin Harbour Catchment Waterways Project (DHCW) motivated the Rapid Creek Landcare Group to organise a number of weed walks. The aim was to establish what areas the group should prioritise for rehabilitation using grants from the Project. In January 2025, the group accompanied Mike Clark, DHCW Project Manager from Landcare NT, on a weed walk. The group started at the Marrara sporting complex and continued on to the diversion weir at White Rocks. Particular note was taken of weed infestations among native vegetation along the riparian fringes.
