Alawa Oval Regeneration Site

Rapid Creek Landcare Group’s working bee efforts this year are focussing on the mangrove verge adjacent to the Alawa oval. We have two sites where we are working to protect regenerating native plants and grasses. This working bee was on 23rd June. We are making fantastic progress in reducing grassy weeds and the threat of hot fires at the sites.

Our regular Monday evening weeding sessions at the regeneration sites along the mangrove verge have paid off. Many native plants and grasses are thriving. Each session has seen new volunteers, along with our regular members. The site is drying out, so a little bit of work now will help protect the native plants from any fires. We have found that in the Dry, soil can be so hard that pulling out weeds by hand becomes impossible.

We are not having any more Monday evening working bees along the Alawa mangrove verge until the next Wet. We will then resume our weed and vine control around the regenerating native plants.
